Frequently Asked Questions About the Pottery Course
Do I need previous experience or talent?
No, not at all! Our pottery courses are designed so that beginners experience success right away. We guide you step by step. You don’t need artistic talent, only the joy of trying something new.
Do you also teach on the pottery wheel?
Yes! That is often the first question. We offer both hand-building (coil and slab techniques) and working on the wheel. In the course description, you can see exactly where the focus lies.
When can I take my pieces home?
Patience is the most important ingredient in pottery. You cannot take your piece home immediately. The process works like this:
-
Drying: your object must dry slowly for about 1–2 weeks.
-
Bisque firing: the first firing in the kiln.
-
Glazing: color and protective coating are applied.
-
Glaze firing: the final firing at high temperatures. Altogether, it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks until you can collect your finished artwork.
What should I wear to the course?
Pottery is hands-on work – and it can get dusty and splashy. It’s best to wear comfortable clothes that may get dirty (e.g., jeans and a T-shirt). Don’t worry: clay washes out easily in the washing machine. We provide aprons on site.
Where do the courses take place?
We offer pottery in Basel and pottery in Liestal.
-
Basel: centrally located, perfect for city residents.
-
Liestal: ideal for everyone from Baselland. Both studios are fully equipped with kilns, wheels, and tools.
Are materials and firing costs included in the price?
Transparency is important to us. In all our workshops, clay, glazes, and firing are included in the course price. There are no hidden costs at the end.
Can I give a pottery course as a gift?
Yes, this is one of our most popular offers! A voucher for a pottery course is a gift of time and creativity – far more valuable than material things. You can purchase vouchers for pottery in Basel or Liestal directly from us. Perfect for birthdays or Christmas.
Do I need to come back separately for glazing?
No, glazing is included in the process and does not require an extra appointment.
What happens if my piece breaks during firing?
Unfortunately, this is part of the pottery process. Sometimes clay cracks in the kiln, for example if an air bubble was trapped inside. This is part of the learning experience. We do everything we can to prevent it (slow drying), but there is never a 100% guarantee with ceramics. If it does happen, we will of course support you and gladly guide you through a new attempt.
Are the courses also offered in English?
Yes! We are very international. Our instructors speak German, English, Chinese, and Russian. You can relax completely. We explain every step so that you understand everything – there are no language barriers in our studio.
